   Other Activities

   Institute faculty are involved with scholarly work, socioeconomic development,
   consultation and service on global and national levels as well as in the Southeast
   of the US.

       Around the World

     IFS faculty activity included:  

  • participation in an international team of scholars to develop international standards of well-being for children beyond mere survival  (A. Andrews)

  • establishing an early childhood program in rural El Salvador (A. López-De Fede)

  • developing a network of universities and community-based organizations in southern Africa  (I. Luckey)

  • consulting on international issues around individuals with disabilities  (A. López-De Fede)

  • consulting on international issues of aging  (B. Hirshorn)

  • developing a Caribbean Family Institute (E. Bolden/A. López-De Fede)

 

 
      Across the Country

      On a national level, IFS faculty members served as

  • members of editorial boards
  • peer reviewers for professional journals and federal grant applications
  • board members of national organizations dealing with
            - aging
            - AIDS
            - child abuse and neglect
            - child development
            - fatherhood
            - neighborhoods
            - race relations

      They provided consultations to programs, organizations, schools,
      agencies and policy-making groups on

  • AIDS prevention
  • alternative health care strategies
  • early childhood development
  • diversity
  • issues of aging
  • mental health in schools
  • special education
  • violence prevention

     One served as an expert witness in U.S. District Court trials on
      the impact of child abuse.
