GIS Capacity

MPR puts GIS to work—integrating, analyzing, mapping, and modeling volumes of spatial data to identify disease prevalence hotspots; low-income, uninsured, and other vulnerable populations; gaps in geographic access to health care; and regional and small-area differences in health care costs, quality, and consumer satisfaction. With a state-of-the-art dedicated GIS server environment and powerful desktop computing resources, the Division processes and geocodes more than one million South Carolina Medicaid recipient addresses and over 20,000 health care provider addresses on a quarterly basis. Computationally intensive network analyses are also performed quarterly to monitor the geographic access of all State Medicaid enrollees to primary and specialty care. In collaborative partnerships with State agencies, private foundations, health care provider associations, and community organizations, the Division produces hundreds of maps, geo-referenced charts and tables, and related geographic information products every year.
