The mission of the Southern Regional Council is to promote racial justice, protect democratic rights and broaden civic participation in the Southern United States. Historically, SRC has inspired and published some of the most important southern academic work and journalism related to racial justice. SRC's current flagship publication, Southern Changes, celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2000. Other SRC periodicals including the Voting Rights Review and the AmeriCorps Tutor (with the LEARNS partners) demonstrate their capacity to prepare informative, thoughtful print materials for training and public education. With Southern Changes and its predecessors, Southern Frontier, New South, South Today, and Southern Voices, the Southern Regional Council has given a credible and authentic voice to the struggle for civil rights and racial justice for most of the century.


VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN OFFICE

The Violence Against Women Office (VASO) of the United States Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs was created to implement the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and to lead the national effort to stop domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Working with U.S. Attorneys to ensure enforcement of the federal criminal statutes contained in the 1994 Act, VAWO assists the Attorney General in formulating policy related to civil and criminal justice for women, and administers more than $270 million a year in grants to help states, tribes, and local communities transform the way in which criminal justice systems respond to crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

WIDER OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN   http://www.w-o-w.org
A national nonprofit organization devoted to improving economic and educational opportunities for low-income women and girls, WOW specializes in preparing women for high-skill, high-wage job opportunities; assisting low-income women in gaining literacy skills for employment; and building leadership of grassroots women and service providers in the policy process. Specifically, WOW advocates for welfare reform, job training, vocational education, and nontraditional employment policy.
